Eye Contact
The Importance of keeping the eye contact during
conversation

Eye contact is not only one of the key components of Body
Language; it is probably the most powerful component. People of
great influence, like politicians, actors and great salespeople
are masters of effective eye contact.
Because eye contact is so important to your ability to
communicate effectively you should make the effort to learn how
to use your eyes effectively. This is both relatively simple
and an art that takes practice to master. Too much eye contact
and you could be seen as aggressive and pushy. Too little eye
contact shows that you are uninterested in the person speaking
while people who consistently avoid eye contact are seen as
untrustworthy.
One of the first steps in establishing a friendship, business
relationship or in establishing a positive impression should be
to make and establish eye contact. The proper amount of time
you want to maintain eye contact with someone varies with
cultural conditioning of a person. Certain ethics groups,
notably Africans, prefer much more eye contact than other
cultures, with Asian cultures seeming to like the least
amount.
Because the idea of the right amount of eye contact differs
from person to person it is best to start with short, frequent
glances towards a person rather than one prolonged stare. As
you carry on the conversation you can vary the amount of eye
contact based on gauging the comfort level of the person.
A good trick I like to use whenever I meet someone is to look
into his or her eyes and to make note of their eye color. There
are three reasons I like to do this. One, it reminds me to look
into their eyes and in fact guarantees that I will make eye
contact. After all, it is hard to determine a person eye color
without looking into their eyes directly.
Secondly the act of eye contact establishes a level of intimacy
with the person, regardless of their sex. Studies have shown
that prolonged eye contact can actually establish attraction
and in any communication attraction is important. People tend
to prefer doing business with people they like.
Thirdly I can notice the pupil size of the person. Salesmen,
psychics and street traders have long known that the pupils of
a person will dilate when they become interested or aroused.
This is an uncontrollable response and I like to look for it so
I know whether or not the person is interested in either my
product or myself.
So you see there is more to eye contact than meets the eye.
(Yeah, terrible pun.) In fact it is so important to everything
you do that involves another person you should make every
effort to learn more about how to effectively use your eyes to
get your message across. You can learn more about eye contact
